Review: L’Oreal H.I.P. and FOTD
I was feeling really bummy last week with a case of the Mondays and decided that I needed some retail therapy. After reading Yummy 411’s Drugstore Beauty post, I stopped by my local Rite Aid to check out the new displays.
To my delight, L’Oreal’s H.I.P. colors were Buy One, Get One Free so I picked up a couple of duos and my first pigment shadows ever!
They had a couple of colors that were really pretty, but I decided that I’d take this opportunity to add some bolder shade to my makeup repertoire.
Lively is a beautiful combination with a nice forest green and neutral brown. Spirited has a deep navy paired with a fun periwinkle blue. The pigment shades were also really beautiful, although the powders were a little coarse and not as fine as I would have liked. Rebel is a sea-green color that I think I’ll reach for a few times during the spring season.
And finally, the star of the bunch is Intrepid. You can’t tell in the swatch, but it’s a gorgeous brown shade with iridescent flecks of blue it in. I can already tell that it’s going to be an extremely versatile color that’ll give that little bit of sass that I love.
Although my first experience with pigments was not as scary as I thought it would be, I wasn’t keen on the fact that some of the pigment fell everywhere on my face making it more sparkly than I would have liked it to be. If anyone has some extra tips for me, I’d love to hear!

can’t go wrong with BOGO deals! I have the Lively duo and it’s a great set to use for green - I like foiling the green shade and using it as a liner. I hear foiling pigments or applying powder under your eyes helps with the fallout, or using a fanbrush to brush away the fallout afterwards.

yay! i’m glad you were able to pick up some great buys (and a good sale!) i picked up lively over the weekend (before the sale, gah!) you look great in your products! the only thing i would suggest is either wetting your brush a bit, or just doing eyes first, so the clean up is easier, then apply foundation etc. thanks for sharing!

Wow spirited looks so gorgeous! You look so pretty, lovely fotd! Green looks good on you! I love the HIP Pigments, they are pretty and just as good as MAC’s imo.
I also love how you paired it with a nude lip from the N collection!

Hi Diana,
GREAT idea about using the green as a liner! I tried to use a big powder brush to get some of the pigment off afterwards but it still left some on my face. I guess it can also double as a shimmer!
Do you have any other HIP products that you like? I think I want to try the Paints next.

I absolutely love Loreal HIP products. However, I don’t have anymore. When I first got into MAC, I gave away allll 9-or so of my HIP shadows. Craziness, uh? I went through that MAC-only phase. Boo!! But I’m lovin’ your FOTD. And where did you get the BOGO sale? I think I may need to stock up again!

Oh and Kia is right. Wetting your brush makes pigments go on so much smoother and cleaner. Also, using a stiff brush helps.

Hey Kia,
Thanks so much for the inspiration for L’Oreal! I had actually gone to Nordie’s for some retail therapy but nothing at the counters were doing anything for me. So I stopped my Rite Aid the next day and was soo excited to see the displays you had just posted about!
I like the idea of wetting the brush a little bit before applying the pigment - will definitely try that next time

Hi Vanessa!
I was really wanting to get more greens since all the rave about 6th Sin metal-X shadow last month from MAC and your lovely forest green FOTD. I’m glad I picked this duo up because I really like it!
Thank goodness you think that HIP pigments are just as good as MAC’s - you know I’d rather pay $12 (or in my case 2 for $12) vs. what MAC is charging!

Hi Miss Brittany -
I can’t believe you gave them away!! But, now you have an excuse to go out and pick new colors
I got the BOGO at a Rite Aid near my house. But I just went again over the weekend and didn’t see it any more - booo. Hopefully it will come back so that you can stock up!!
What colors did you have before? I want to go check out some more of their products

hmm…I’ve got the shadow duo in Mischief (gold/navy) and Foxy (pinkish mauve/brown) and mainly use the darker shades for wet or dry lining, and I love their cream liners, I have all 5, haha…the cream blushes are nice, but I’m still getting used to them, and I like the Shadow Stick colors (Alluring and Mesmerizing) even though the actual stick shape makes it pesky to use. Hope the paints work well - and of course, I bought the massive amount of HIP products whenever there was a BOGO or 50% off sale at CVS

Greens are really stunning on you, Lilan. I am so jealous that you guys get to take advantage of the sale. I have NONE of the drugstores that have the sale going on over here
On January 24th, 2008 Lilan said:
Thank you, Daily Obsession! I haven’t worn greens in a long time so it was really fun to wear them again.

Wow, Diana, you’ve got quite a HIP collection! I haven’t really used creme blushes but that’s one of my next things on my list since I’m looking to expand my blusher collection.
But it’s really cool to know that a drugstore brand can produce so many great products!
I’ll keep you posted about the paints; I’ll probably pick them up at the next BOGO sale - can’t wait!

Aww Mrs. Lynne! You guys don’t have any drugstores with the sale? That’s kind of tragic. Where do you go to get cheapie makeup in Hawaii?
Well, we’d better stock up for you for when you come visit the Bay Area next time!!

I like Intrepid too! Along with Valiant, it’s one of my favorite colors from this line.
How are you finding that Lash Blast mascara? I bought it a while back, but sadly, it kept flaking on me.
On January 26th, 2008 Lilan said:
Hi MandyPandy,
I’ve been using Lash Blast (full review coming soon) for the last couple of weeks and I gotta say, it just didn’t wow me - at all. I’m trying really hard to make it work since the review I saw on The Makeup Girl was really convincing.
It didn’t flake on me but for now, I think I’m going to have to stick by L’Oreal’s Original Volume. We’ll see though!
What’s your favorite drugstore mascara?

Oh I def missed out on the BOGo but bought one on a sale price anyways. I picked the orange-y and beige color combo. I wasn’t too impressed with the pigement but then again I wasn’t expecting much. I also bought the HIP pigement (one that came with brush) in green…it’s been sitting in the case for 2 weeks now. I’m pretty sure that one will be more vibrant ,have you got one of those?
On February 11th, 2008 Lilan said:
Hey Lea!
The ones pictured are the only HIP products that I have so far. Rebel (the green pigment) is very vibrant! It’s really fun to wear.
I haven’t had a chance to try Intrepid (the brownish iridescent shade) but I need to soon - there’s so little time, I wish I could change my makeup 2 or 3 times a day, LOL.
I really want to try some of the HIP paints; have you tried any of those yet? I hear they’re really nice
