Celebrity Makeup Artist Q&A: JJ on Danity Kane

dk-welcome-to-the-dollhouse.jpg

For all you Making the Band fans, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Danity Kane’s sophmore album hits stores today! And as much as I love their music, I really love the girls’ sense of style and beauty as well. Did you see the Making the Band episode last night with the girls’ makeover and photo shoot? They look so gorgeous and classic! I can’t wait to get the CD after work and check it out!

J.J. Jacobucci (also known as “JJ, the Jacob of Makeup”!) is a celebrity makeup artist who has worked with Danity Kane since the beginning of their career. She’s also worked with rapper Eve on her MAC Viva Glam campaign and Tambourine music video. J.J.’s beautiful work can also be seen on other artists such as Ashanti, Kat DeLuna, Lil Kim, and Foxy Brown.

We got a fabulous opportunity to ask J.J. how she created Danity Kane’s makeup look for the Welcome to the Dollhouse album cover shoot, and here’s what she had to say!

The Daily Cookie: What was your inspiration, or theme, for Danity Kane’s album and cover shoot?
J.J.: Diddy wanted to do something young, fresh, stylish, trendy all rolled into one for this new Danity Kane album. We wanted to keep the makeup look fresh, stylish and trendy.

TDC: Did you give the girls a different look based on their personalities?
J.J.: When I work with Danity Kane I try to use the same color scheme on each girl but will change it up according to their own style. With Aubrey, she has more of a dramatic makeup look so I’ll use darker colors on her eyes. Aundrea has more of a romantic look so I’ll do a soft smokey eye. With Dawn I’ll use some color under her eyes like blue. I will tweak the makeup look according to each girl but still keeping consistency.

TDC: While working with each girl, can you give us some insight into what the girls are like?
J.J.: I love them all! I have been working with them since the beginning. Each girl is unique in her own way but they are all beautiful on the inside and the outside. Aubrey is the clown of the group. She knows what she wants. She’s sexy and is like the Barbie Doll of the group. Aundrea is the smallest of the girls but is so strong and sweet. She exudes confidence. Dawn is adorable. She’s a Leo so she’s strong. She’s been through a lot so everyone goes to her for advice. Dawn and Shannon are the mothers of bunch. Shannon is a sweetheart. She’s like the mother of the group. The girls all go to her for advice. D Woods is so athletic. She motivates you! She’s very strong in a silent way.

TDC: Can you tell The Daily Cookie readers how they can re-create Danity Kane’s look at home?
J.J.: Go to the MAC store and pick up these essentials for recreating Danity Kane’s makeup looks -

It’s all about glow on the body. You can use Sundressing Body to make your skin look tanned and golden bronze iridescent powder for a bronzy glow to the skin.

My favorite foundations to use on the girls are MAC Face and Body and Studio Tech.

I like to use MAC Pigments on the girls because the color intensity is stronger – my favorites are Rose, Tan, Melon, Mauvement, Dark Soul and any of the metal pigments.

I use lots of MAC Fibre Rich Lash mascara in black on them.

On Aubrey I used #35 lashes because she likes more of a dramatic look. The rest of the girls like #7 lashes.

Cheeks – use MAC blushes like Pink Swoon, Pinch o’ Peach, Peaches, Raizen and Harmony.

Lips – on Aundrea I use Viva Glam V lipglass or lipstick, Aubrey I use Pink Poodle lipglass, Shannon I use Prr lipglass and on Dawn and D I use Oh Baby lipglass and Beux lustreglass.

TDC: Is the makeup look you created for Danity Kane reflective of any hot, new beauty trends that are coming up?
J.J.: The look is all about being hot, young and sexy. I always stay updated with the new collections MAC comes out with – their products are always fun, young and trendy.

Check out this video I found with the girls of Danity Kane, backstage at their album cover shoot!

We also asked J.J. to share a few beauty and makeup tips and trends for the upcoming season.

TDC: What are your makeup bag must-haves?
J.J.: Studio Tech foundation is my favorite foundation – I also use a lot of MAC Face and Body because it’s water resistant. Lashes, MAC lip glass – my favorite ones are Viva Glam V, Russian Red, Prrr and Pink Poodle. Smolder kohl pencil, lots of black mascara, and Golden Bronze iridescent powder.

TDC: What should a woman never leave home without?
J.J.: Women should never leave home without their foundation – if your skin doesn’t look good then the rest doesn’t matter! Eyelash curler, mascara and lipgloss are all important also.

TDC: What is the one mistake women often make when applying makeup?
J.J.: The biggest mistake women make is not blending their foundation and not wearing the right shade of foundation. When you are picking a foundation apply some on your neck and your face so you can get the right color. Also blend your lip line – so you don’t get a harsh contrast from your lip line and your lipstick or lipgloss.

TDC: What’s the next big beauty trend you see for spring/summer?
J.J.: Colored pencils – blue, yellow, green, Black liner with color over it, Sun-kissed glow on skin with reddish orangey lips.
