Origins’ Youthtopia Eye Cream
There are so many eye creams on the market that claim to have anti-aging qualities. I have yet to use an eye cream on the regular, although I should probably start soon – I ain’t gettin’ any younger!
One thing that caught my eye about Origins’ Youthtopia anti-aging eye cream was that it noted its star ingredient list, rhodiola, on the label. The Origins website says that it’s a “Siberian herb linked with longevity, visibly de-ages, reduces puffiness and helps empower fragile eye skin to rebound from damaging stress”.
Still, I was curious so I Googled the term to see what I’d find.
According to Drugs.com, rhodiola is used to treat “fatigue, depression, anemia, GI problems (??), infections, CNS disorders, fertility problems, cancers, aches, and pains. R. rosea also may possess antioxidant and anticarcinogenic effects”. Hmm, nothing like what Origins said it would do.
So I was skeptical; it didn’t sound like including such an ingredient would be beneficial to my skin. Why should I buy a product marketed with an ingredient to help treat fertility problems and infections – things that happen to you on the inside, not outside?
But I did notice that the last line says “may possess antioxidant and anticarcinogenic effects”. Upon further research, it seems that rhodiola can help reduce the occurance of cancers, including skin cancer. And there was my big “a-ha!” moment.
It all makes sense to me now, although I’m not sure of it still makes sense to call it an “anti-aging” product. This just sounds like it would be good for your skin regardless of age if it contains cancer-preventing ingredients. I think I may give this one a try after all.
What do you think? Have there been products out there that you’ve tried or steered clear of just by reading its ingredient list?
It’s Thursday, and the weekend is almost here, yippee! Do you have any fun plans for the weekend? I’m going to take it easy since I’m out of town for a wedding next weekend – maybe I’ll go get a massage and a pedi… ooo, I can’t wait!

Oh, I haven’t seen that Aveeno commercial. Shitake mushrooms – that’s interesting. I wonder with its “healing” power is??
Girl, if someone told us what was good, we wouldn’t have so much fun with the blogs!!

The only thing I really am picky about are silicones for hair products. But everything else…bring it!

One product ingredient that really freaks me out is placenta…yep, placenta. I’m not sure if many products use it anymore…but they definitely used to. I’d take silicone over placenta any day!
To bad you aren’t going up to Tahoe this weekend…I am and I think I am going to pay a visit to a certain favorite nail salon! Is it still in the same place?
Love,

Hi Karen,
Hmm, I’m not sure I know what silicone does to hair – what does it do to your lovely locks? I don’t know much about hair products at all..
I’m pretty much up for trying most things too. I actually don’t even read labels of anything I buy. I’ll admit, marketing works on me!

Hey Miss Shannon!
What are the products you’ve seen with placenta in it? Since I don’t really read labels, I definitely need to know!
Yeah, our favorite S. Tahoe nail salon is still there!! She actually got another location in the same plaza and is opening a gift shop. So if the regular location is now gifts, just walk up near Raley’s and the new nail spot is there!
Tell Moms I said hello, if you see her – or take me with you! LOL

Everything that claims to be antioxidant is potentially anticarcinogenic and anti-aging, for antioxidants remove free-radicals that are both carcinogenic and pro-aging. It is just a matter of how it is delivered and how much the tissue can absorb. There’s still much controversy on how much skin can absorb substances like this and many others…

Hi Paula,
This is definitely an interesting statement. I am sort of new to reading ingredients on skin care labels and wasn’t even aware that there would be other aspects to consider – like how much is really effective or over-effective for your skin.
Thanks so much for the idea, it’s something for me to keep in mind! Hope you’re having a great weekend so far

I have been looking for a really good eye cream for a while now. I don’t want to buy something blindly so I’ve been reading reviews but I still feel like trying something will be a shot in the dark.
I have darkish circles, slight puffiness, and the area can tend to be somewhat dry. Any recommendations?

Hi Shop With a Vengence!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m not a regular wearer of eye creams – it’s so bad, I know.
However, I am testing out one eye serum right now from Estee Lauder – the Idealist Refinishing Eye Serum. So far, I’m liking it. I’ve been using it for a few days and some dryness around my eyes that I’m noticing are a little softer now. You can probably ask for a sample, the SA at my local counter did
Let me know how what you end up trying!

Hi Shop With A Vengeance —
I’ve been using Lumessence rejuvenating eye creme by Aubrey. Found it in the health food store. It’s moisturizing but not gooey.
Also Luxiva Triple Action Eye Gel by Merle Norman. I love it in the morning – it feels cool and refreshing yet it’s also moisturizing .
Best,
Suzann
