The Body Shop Q&A with Chase Aston

The Beauty Blog Network recently had an opportunity to pick Chase Aston’s brain, an international makeup artist with The Body Shop, with a Q&A.
Here are his answers to a couple of my burning makeup questions!
The Daily Cookie: What are 3 beauty faux pas that women always fall trap to, and what can we do to avoid it?
Chase Aston: Not using the correct tools when applying make-up is a big faux pas that women don’t realize. I always suggest using brushes for foundation and eye color. Use soft bristle brushes, and try to find ones that are eco-friendly (The Body Shop Brush Collection never uses animal hair). In fact, all The Body Shop products are 100% vegetarian. I always use a large brush to blend foundation, and a concealer brush to cover those imperfections. For eyes, I apply shadow using a soft eye brush and blend color into the creases using a slanted brush.
- Another mistake is not prepping skin prior to applying make-up. Moisturizing is key! I like to spritz on a moisturizer with beneficial ingredients such as The Body Shop Vitamin E Mist, it’s light and a quick skin pick me up. It’s also great for setting the make-up after applying.
- Not properly cleansing skin before bed. That is the first thing every woman should be taught – never go to bed with make-up on, you are clogging pores and damaging skin. Use a cleanser suited for your skin type, and for hard to remove eye make-up, use a gentle eye make-up remover, followed by a clarifying toner (i.e. The Body Shop Seaweed Purifying Toner) to be sure you have removed all traces of make-up and to leave the skin feeling fresh, purified, and looking shine-free.
TDC: What is your favorite decade in terms of beauty (retro 60s, punk 80s, etc.) and what are some of your tips for modernizing those looks for women today?
CA: The “fabulous” 80’s really is the decade that won’t die! Makeup of the 80’s era can be summed up using The Three B’s: Big, Bold, Bright.
Big: Eighties makeup was exaggerated and big. Big hair complemented the big style. Lots of heavy mascara and liner, lots of eye shadow in heavy tones of blue and green; these were common traits. The heavily lined lips and lipstick, as well as a full set of makeup which was applied each morning, added a sense of power and prestige.
Bold: Color trends were bold. Blue, green, mauve, fuchsia, and orange were among the bold color palette of the 1980s. A boldness was placed on the lips and eyes with heavy liner on both. Cheek colors were also very bold.
Bright: The palettes used in the early eighties were bright, especially for night time makeup. Blue was very popular.
How to Modernize Eighties Style Makeup for Women Today:
1. Begin with a cleansed and moisturized face.
2. Apply corrections as needed for the eye area and correct areas of redness.
3. Eighties makeup emphasized matte foundation that matched the skin tone leaving no line of demarcation. Bronzer was also popular. Try brushing bronzer over the foundation for a tanned appearance.
4. Apply loose powder to set.
5. Line the upper lid in black.
6. Apply a fuchsia shadow to the mobile eyelid. Then, apply a paler pink or white shadow to the arch of the brow as a highlighter. You can use blue and white shadow or blend fuchsia and orange for a fun evening look.
7. Apply black mascara.
8. Brows were bushy in the 80s. Groom and brush.
9. Line the lips using a fuchsia liner slightly exaggerated and apply fuchsia lipstick.
10. Apply pink cheek color to the cheeks.
