Date Night at Trapeze
Last week after a brow appointment I had in San Mateo (more on that to come!), the Boyfriend and I decided to stop in Burlingame, CA to eat dinner in its quaint little downtown area. I haven’t been down there in a little while and I forgot how cute it is with shops, yummy-looking restaurants and a Sephora where I can actually find parking! If you’re ever in the neighborhood, spend an afternoon there – it’s fun
We decided on Trapeze on Lorton Street for some European-inspired grub. Neither one of us was that hungry so we didn’t go all out, but agreed that it was nice to get out of the house.
Skipping appetizers, we happily wolfed down a couple of pieces of bread each with this yummilicious twist on the olive oil and balsamic dip. We asked our server about the concoction and it sounds pretty easy to make – combine roasted garlic, red onion, sun-dried tomato, basil, olive oil and balsamic in a food processor and you’re all set to go! You know the Boyfriend and I are going to try making this at home very soon.
For our entrees, I opted for the Crab Tortellini in a tomato cream sauce topped with caviar. I gotta say, I really wanted to love it – crab and pasta? C’mon! The tomato cream sauce was very reminiscent of Chef Boyardee and because I do eat Chef Boyardee on occasion and like it, this is probably the only reason why I didn’t give this dish a total thumbs down. I mean look at the color of that sauce! To make matters worse, the caviar was kind of useless and crunched in my mouth. It didn’t add flavor and the contrast in texture was really what I was wanting. ‘Nuff said.
The Boyfriend tried one of the evening’s specials, a Seafood Risotto filled with scallops and prawns, some lemon zest and parsley. I tried a couple of forkfuls and couldn’t decide if I liked it – maybe because I kept thinking it was good but that some of the risotto was undercooked. The Boyfriend enjoyed the first few bites as well and then got bored with it – oh well.
Overall, the food was not that inspiring but that starter dip with bread that they serve might be enough for me to want to give Trapeze another go around. Hopefully next time we go out the food is better but spending time with my babe sure was fun enough!
Hope your Monday is going well, I’ve got a lot of fun stories planned for you this week so please stay tuned!!

I do miss Bay area restaurants, though it sounds like that one wasn’t a favorite of yours. Have you ever been to Bacchanal’s? (I think that’s the name), or The Stinking Rose, or La Fondue, or La Papillion? Those were some of the ones that I liked.

This place looks so cute but seemed disappointing.
I think if I gave it a try, I would pass on the creamy items.
They seem kind of heavy.

Hi Karen B,
I could eat that dip all day long, no joke!
It’s about 30 mins until lunch time for me right now and I’m trying to think in my head, what sounds good – maybe a sandwich and fries

Hi Decorative Diva,
The Boyfriend has been wanting to go to The Stinking Rose for sometime now but La Fondue is what really popped out at me from your list. I love, LOVE fondue. It’s so fun to eat. I’ll have to find out where that is in the city now.
Have you ever been to the Melting Pot? It’s yummy too!

Hi karrie,
If you ever give this place a try, there was a paella on the menu that sounded delicious!
Are you from the Bay Area? What are some of your favorite restaurants?

Yes, I’ve been to the Melting pot. It’s ok, but it pales compared to La Fondue. It’s in Saratoga.

I used to live in Burlingame, but we’d often head down to San Jose or up to San Francisco to do things. La Fondue is where my husband proposed to me
We would always order the ‘Wild Thing’ from La Fondue.

Hi Lilan!
I was born and raised in San Francisco!
But I live in SoCal now.
The last time I came up for a visit, I had a great brunch at Foreign Cinema in the Mission district.
I would recommend it.
The whole brunch menu was great!

I love the reference to Chef Boyardee! I often ate it as a kid but despise it now!

Gah, Saratoga sounds so far from me Decorative Diva!
But anything where you dip your food sounds delish to me and I’ll have to keep this on my radar for the next time I’m out there – Wild Thing sounds yum!!

Hi karrie,
How funny, I’m actually from Orange County and now live in SF! Where are you living now?
I’ve heard a lot of things about Foreign Cinema, I just haven’t had a chance to go yet. I can’t wait to try it out though!
Hope you’re having a happy Thursday!

Hi Ashley,
The dip with the bread was pretty yummy. Everything beyond that was a little.. bleh. But that doesn’t mean I won’t eat here again!
