Allure Beauty 101 Event at Clinique
Last Thursday, a couple of friends and I attended Allure’s Beauty 101 Event at the Clinique counter of Bloomingdale’s, complete with h’orderves of tuna tartare; mango, pomegranate and hibiscus refreshments, and mini chocolate desserts to learn about the new fall trends and how to get the look.
The event started off with a Beauty 101 demonstration with Allure Magazine’s Beauty Merchandising Director and Clinique makeup artist Dana as they talked the audience through how to create one of the season’s top fall trends, the smoky eye, on my friend Susan as their model.
With just 5 products in 5 quick minutes, Susan’s look was completed in a cinch. Start by prepping the lids with a little bit of Clinique’s Touch Base for Eyes before applying new Colour Surge Eye Shadow Stay Matte in Dark Denim, a grayish navy shade, to the outer V. Next, line your eyes heavily with Kohl Shaper for Eyes eye pencil in Black Denim and use a small brush to smudge out the liner.
Use a fluffy blending brush to blend out any harsh lines and then apply two coats of High Impact Mascara to your lashes. Complete the look with Clinique’s new Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Guavagold.
After the Beauty 101 demonstration, my other friend Helen and I sat back to get our own makeovers. Since the weather isn’t fall-like in San Francisco yet, I wanted my makeup artist, Christina, give me a really fresh face with the hottest color trend for the season, plums.
Christina started by giving me a skin analysis so that we could determine that my skin type is II, meaning that my skin is not too oily, not too dry, with some sheen in the T-zone. I haven’t used Clinique’s skincare since high school so it was nice to get a recommended regimen, personalized just for me. You, too, can determine your own skin type and recommended skin care regimen by taking the skin analysis on the Clinique website.
My makeover was really fun and I was happy with the end result. Here’s what we used:
Face:
- Moisture Sheer in Neutral
- Blended Face Powder in Invisible Blend
Eyes:
- Brow Shaper in Charcoaled
- Colour Surge Eye Shadow Stay Matte in French Vanilla, Stone Violet, & Night Plum
- Colour Surge Eye Shadow Super Shimmer in Daybreak
- Brush-On Cream Liner in True Black
- High Impact Mascara (top) & Lash Power Long-Wearing Mascara (bottom)
Cheeks:
- Blushing Blush Powder Blush in Aglow
Lips:
- Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Stellar Plum
I’m really diggin’ Clinique’s skincare and tinted moisturizer (Moisture Sheer) – my only gripe is that it only comes in 3 shades – boo…
I just got a new computer and I’m going to play around with it for the rest of the day. How was your weekend? Can you believe the weekend’s almost over? Double boo…

Hi Nikki,
Thanks so much! I really love the purple shadows she used and might go back to pick up Night Plum, although, I’m on the fence about matte shadows. When I apply mattes myself, it’s really hit or miss.
How are you at applying mattes on yourself?
Happy Monday, girl!

Thanks Karen B!
Do you usually attend local beauty events in your area, too? I can’t wait for the next one!

You look great!
What kind of computer did you get? I am such a geek. LOL

Hi Lilan,
I apply it just by patting it with a brush, it works
I love applying matte most of the time, especially at work, I like the clean look!
Try it, it is a hit or miss at the start (same as you) but as time goes on, you get the drift

Hi Marisol!
I got a really great deal on an HP dv2000 at Office Depot – $749 with $200 back in rebates, woot! I’ve never had an HP before but so far it’s a dream! Super quiet and fast. Hopefully it’ll hold up once I do more blogging but so far it’s nice
What kind of computer do you have?
On September 29th, 2008 Marisol said:
Wow sounds like you got a great deal!
I have a macbook pro that I got at the end of 2006. It is my first MAC and I am never going back to Windows.

Hey Marisol,
It really was a great deal, I couldn’t pass it up!
But, I told the Boyfriend that the next computer we get is gonna be a mac, I can’t wait!

Meh. The makeover looks alright, but I wouldn’t say that the MA has mad Lilan skillz when it comes to makeup. I hate when you get a makeup counter makeover and you know you could have done a much better job had you applied the stuff yourself. Still, I’d take a Clinique makeover over a MAC hackjob any day of the week.
How was the tuna tartar?

Hey Mandy!
Well it certainly was a different look for me since I don’t normally do my makeup that way but I thought the plum wasn’t too bad.
The tuna tartare itself was actually really yummy but the crunchy cone it came in was disappointingly stale – boo
