Three Custom Color Me Mine!

A couple of weeks ago, The Daily Cookie was invited to the Three Custom Color Specialist’s NYC studio for a peek on the inner-workings of the boutique makeup brand as well as meet co-founder Chad Hayduk. Founded in 1997, the brand’s celebrity clientele includes Angelina Jolie, Mary J. Blige, Renee Zellweger, Penelope Cruz and many more.

With a humble beginning and over 30 years of combined experience between the Three Custom Color Specialists – Chad, Scott Catto and Trae Bodge – the founding trio started the line 11 years ago out of Chad and Scott’s New York apartment in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood with just a Custom Blending Service for Lips and 25 ready-to-wear lip colors.

The company has since customized over 8,000 discontinued colors and developed a full line of over 250 ready-to-wear color cosmetics based on the theory of warm and cool colors that are now available in their bright, intimate and immaculate space in the Flatiron District.

To find out if you’re warm or cool-toned check by going through your makeup bag and pulling out at the eye shadows. Which colors blend in with your skin tone? Do the silvers, blues, whites and grays melt right into your skin? Or do the golds, pinks, greens and beiges blend in better?

If the silvers and blues look more subtle then you’re cool-toned. If the golds, pinks and beiges nearly disappear into your skin – you’re warm. Those who are in between can wear any and all colors. Like 75% of the U.S. population, I am warm.

The Three Custom Color look for Fall/Winter 2008 will be a golden, dewy look with emphasis on sultry, smoky eyes. To get the look, Chad recommended the following to for my warm coloring: eye shadow in Bronze, eye shadow accent in Champagne and a wet/dry powder eyeliner in Warm Black from the line’s warm palette.

For the cheeks, Chad suggested Wallflower, the newest shade from their popular Watercolors for Cheeks line. The dewy, shimmery beige is the perfect color to keep the emphasis on the eyes. To complement my new Colombian tan (more on that in my next post) and the muted cheeks and eyes, Chad custom created a bronze lip gloss just for me.

First, Chad sets up his work space to begin mixing with a canvas, liquid gloss, and spatula.

Next, the base colors for the gloss are determined and mixed.

A liquid gloss formula is added to the custom-blended color.

After testing the first version of the gloss, we determine that it’s a little too bronze and add a little bit more pink.

And here I am sporting the final version of my new custom-blended color!
