MAC Dame Edna Highlight Powder Gives a Subtle Glow

mac-dame-edna-spectacle_cover.jpg

I wasn’t very much into face highlighters until I tried Prescriptives Winter Reflections All-Over Highlighter from their Holiday 2008 collection.  I loved it so much that now I just can’t get enough!

Earlier this month, MAC released their Dame Edna collection inspired by Dame Edna herself, a lilac-haired, jetsetter.  The collection, like its namesake, is over-the-top, featuring bold colors of blues, purples and fuchsias tucked into lavender compacts topped with Dame Edna’s signature spectacles.

And the best thing about the collection?  The two face highlighters, of course!

Compared to my current All-Over Highlighter, Dame Edna High-Light Powders ($26 US) have some advantages and differences that make them a nice addition to ever-growing beauty collection.

The Good

It comes in a sturdy compact that makes it a breeze for carrying around in my purse for mid-day touch ups.  I love the whimsical packaging, it really sets it apart and makes my friends ooh and ahh when I pull it out.

If you thought that Prescriptives All-Over Highlighter was too shimmery or more suitable for evening, Dame Edna High-Light Powder is a toned down version that’s less in the sparkle department, making it much more universal for everyday.

Rose Personified: NARS Spring 2009

nars-spring-2009-promo.jpg

If you love pink hues but the soft look from my First Blush FOTD yesterday was too subtle for you, I think you’ll really dig NARS Spring 2009 collection inspired by 1970s pastel shades mixed in with brighter berry hues.

I don’t think I’m brave enough to pull it off but this collection features a deep red, matte eye shadow single in Grenadines ($22 US) but the model looks great with it though, don’t you think?

However, I am eying the blush duo in Hungry Heart ($36 US) featuring an iridescent gold ivory and pale pink with a golden sheen.  I’m totally into face highlighters right now and this would be a pretty one for spring.

Go For Rose: Clinique First Blush FOTD

clinique-first-blush-fotd.jpg

Wednesdays are generally my favorite day of the week, mostly because it lets me know that the weekend is quickly approaching.  And secondly, because Bravo plays reruns of my favorite food show, Top Chef!

However, this particular Wednesday is not as lovely.  Today in San Francisco it’s no longer sunny as it has been for the past few days.  Since it’s rainy and gross outside, I thought I’d do some wishful thinking and do my makeup in a way that would (hopefully) will spring to come back to the Bay.

With a couple of new items from Clinique’s First Blush collection, I gave myself a rosy FOTD inspired by one of my favorite spring florals: the tulip.

All of the Fresh Bloom Eye Shadows ($16.50 US), are finely milled with soft colors for the season.  If you enjoy a more subtle payoff in your eye shadow shades, I think you’ll like these.  For me, the only shade I couldn’t get to come through without any help was Cherry Blossom, the pink palette.

California Coast Road Trip: Day 1

Okay, this is long overdue but I still wanted to share my first road trip up the California coast with you and all sights we saw and places we stopped at.

As with lots of road trips starting in southern California, we hopped on Interstate 5 early on a Sunday morning to begin our trek up the coast.

First stop, the quaint beachside city of San Buenaventura, otherwise known simply as Ventura, and walked around the little downtown area to check out the shops.

Then we made our way to Santa Barbara and stopped for a bit to eat at Joe’s Cafe and walked around the gorgeous outdoor shopping area to enjoy the weather.

Afterwards, we started our scenic route to Lake Cachuma for a pit stop and pictures.

After hearing about the town of Solvang, home to the largest Danish community in California, on Kathy Griffin’s My Life on the D-List, I was curious about what this place had to offer.

Solvang has tons of bakeries.  We stopped at one where I had a petit four and gandered at a large gingerbread house on display!

Then we walked the streets and admired the cute little buildings that looked like they came straight out of a children’s book.

Our first day on the road ended in Pismo Beach with a warm bowl of clam chowder in our bellies before retiring for the night.
