After-Dinner Desserts at Citizen Cake
A couple of Saturdays ago, the Boyfriend and I went out to dinner at one of our favorite hole-in-the-wall Thai spots, King of Thai. Knowing exactly where to go, we hopped into the car and drove towards Citizen Cake in Hayes Valley to try some of Elizabeth Faulkner’s famous confections. We had never been there before and were excited to see what the hoopla was all about.
Even before we stepped into the restaurant, the Boyfriend knew he wanted a crème brûlée and thankfully there was one on the menu: Rosebud Crème Brûlée with Saffron-Pistachio Cookies.
I’m not a fan, but beyond the crispy sugary top shell was a deliciously light and silky custard that melted in my mouth. It would have been near perfection if I even remotely liked crème brûlée.
The cookies on the other hand were unmemorable. I was curious about saffron in a cookie and was disappointed when I couldn’t taste it. The pistachio was also underwhelming making the cookie just a crunchy texture to counter the creamy.
For me, the dessert menu didn’t seem overly complicated and certainly didn’t have a wow factor. I was hoping that I would see something and just have to try it. Nonetheless, I wasn’t about to discount any potential deliciousness before having a taste.

The plating was pretty and I love strawberry cake so I was looking forward devouring this. The taste of the mochi cake was delicious, almost like a regular vanilla cake. The texture however was a bit tough, I couldn’t easily cut into my cake into smaller bite-sized pieces therefore hindering my experience.
The strawberries and cream pairing is classic and I liked how the tart of the balsamic gave it a different profile. I do prefer eating balsamic in savory dishes but overall I enjoyed my plate of Intro Spring. It certainly hit the sweet spot.

I love creme brulee. If you and the BF ever go to Chaya, try it there. So yummy! Also, Boulevard’s has an awesome creme brulee but I think it’s like a sour apple creme brulee.
