Easy Brush Cleaning Tips for the Busy

mac-brush-cleaner_cp.jpg

I know that washing my makeup brushes is so very important, like eating my vegetables! But who has the time?

It takes forever to wash them and even longer to dry them. What can I say? I’m impatient!  Inevitably, germs, leftover product, and dust get trapped in those soft bristles that I apply to my face. There has to be a solution to this evil cycle of doom and so, I set off on the miraculous quest for an easier, quicker way to cleanse brushes and found my answer at MAC.

Read on for a lesson that changed my makeup life – in terms of brushes, anyway ;)

Step 1. Pour a little bit of brush cleanser onto a thick paper towel. I use MAC Brush Cleanser ($11 US). Focus on pouring the liquid over a large area, not soaking the towel all the away through.

Step 2. Grab your first brush and gently brush the bristles across the damp towel. Don’t smash the bristles to the towel or you’ll damage the brush.  Just gently glide the brush over the towel in circular motions to get rid of all the dirt and bacteria trapped in the brushes. It’s okay if some bristles fall out, but you may want to be more gentle.

Step 3. Lay out another paper towel and carefully place the clean brush onto the towel. Make sure that the bristles are on the paper towel, and carefully use your fingers to shape the bristles into the normal shape. Your brush may flatten a little while drying, so it’s important that you push them into shape.

Step 4. Look at all the leftover bits that were stuck in your brush! Isn’t it slightly disturbing? Maybe we’ll all be more motivated to wash our brushes more often.  ;) Also, wash your hands! There are strong chemicals in the brush cleanser, that’s how the germs get killed. You don’t want any of those chemicals on your hands, so wash them!

Note: You can wash your brushes as often as you like. The makeup artist I was talking to has to wash her brushes multiple times everyday, to keep her brushes sanitary for the next client. Don’t be afraid, washing everyday won’t harm your brushes.

Was this tutorial helpful to you? How do you normally wash your brushes? Anyone willing to admit how often they wash their brushes? I will if you will! :D
