Luscious Lotions & Potions for Pretty Skin

lotions-and-creams-intro.jpg

Nowadays dry skin is as unnecessary as creasing eye shadow. Just like you can use a primer for eye color, a good body moisturizer is the cure-all solution for dry skin.

My mild obsession with keeping my skin soft and supple leads me to try out tons of lotions and potions. There are different products for every body part, so it’s easy to get carried away!

Here are some of my top picks for keeping your skin feeling baby soft:

I never like to neglect my hands since they’re prone to aging faster than any other part of the body. Rubbing a cream rich with natural ingredients like lavender, chamomile, and green tea, is one easy way to keep them pretty longer. Smooth Sea Enzyme Seaweed Hand Cream ($18 US) onto your hands then slip them into gloves to help them heal from the day.

For feet, rub Sea Enzyme Seaweed Peppermint Foot Cream ($20 US) in, and put on big, thick socks to let your feet absorb the lotion. Peppermint, sage, and mint will cool and calm your tired, achy feet.  Although the scent doesn’t make me crazy, it’s easy for me to see why my sister and mom like the rich botanical scent.

For me, scent is an important factor when shopping for good body moisturizers.  That’s why I like The Body Shop Mini Body Butter in Strawberry ($8 US) and Korres Body Milk in Basil Lemon ($15 US).

The Body Shop’s Body Butter smells deliciously fruity without being artificial and the Korres Body Milk tempts the senses with exotic herb blends and bright citruses! It’s a fun way to spruce up the boring task of applying lotions.

If you want a cheaper, but good alternative, Yes to Carrots C Through the Dry Spell Body Butter ($12.99 US) will do the trick. The huge tub will take you centuries to finish since you only need a little of the rich butter to do the job.  Apply right after you shower for the best benefits.

Salves are great for many things because they’re multi-purpose products. There is no wrong way to use them. I find that they make great lip balms, heavy duty moisturizers, and eye brow gel.

Some people even like to use them as treatments for burns or wounds. It’s completely up to you, but you’ll probably find it helpful to have a pot of these salves around the house!  My picks are Rosebud Strawberry Lip Balm and Moisturizer ($7 US) and Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream ($25 US).

Here’s a fun cheat sheet to help you decide what works best for you!

- Body Butters are good for extremely dry skin that needs intensive moisture. You usually only need a little, and the thick butter is mostly sold in tubs.

- Body Lotions are lighter than butters but perfectly fine for those who just need a little moisture. Ideal for summer, since they’re not as heavy-weight and won’t feel greasy.

- Body Milks are light-weight, perfect for those who just want a drink of water for their skin.

- Creams for hands and feet are best for hands and feet only! They target specific issues and are heavier than others.  Try using them overnight so the benefits can soak through.

- Salves are great do-it-all products. Use them for everything and give them to friends.  Everyone needs at least one!
