Barney’s Beanery in Santa Monica

Have you eaten at Barney’s Beanery in Santa Monica at the 3rd Street Promenade?  They have a massive menu to suit all tastes.

But we really recommend you munch on any of their dishes that include chili – from nachos to burgers to Mexican fare (what a combo!).

We liked the Chili Cheese Burger with onion rings (above) but my favorite was the Grilled Chicken Sandwich on sourdough with my chili cheese wedge fries.

I much prefer my chili without beans and this recipe was one of the better ones I’ve eaten in a long time.  So good! :)

Watermarc Restaurant in Laguna Beach

{Image Source: Watermarc}

The scene at Watermarc on Pacific Coast Highway is noisy and very bar-esque but is well-lit and with, mostly, good food.

We started with the New Zealand Greenlip Mussels with leek, shallot, and saffron lemon cream.  Those yellow noodles are actually onions, which were interesting.  They were still crunchy, yet the taste was so mellow you might not have guessed they were onions!

Tomahawk Rib-Eye Steak with white truffle porcini butter and creamed corn.  The piece of meat itself was not has rough and tough looking as the over one foot bone it came on.  Nonetheless, it was delicious – I really love ribeyes!

Filet Three Ways (left to right) – “Wellington” with mushroom duxelle and puff pastry,  “Diane” with peppercorn and brandy topped with onion rings, and “Oscar” with lump crab, asparagus and bearnaise.  By far my least favorite was Oscar, the crab on top tasted like a blob of bread-like stuffing – ick.

For our steak sides, we ordered Artichoke Risotto with fried garlic and lemon oil.  The boyfriend loved this, it was so yummy!

White Cheddar Au Gratin Potatoes with butter braised leeks and applewood bacon was not like a traditional layered gratin, but made with chunks of potatoes instead.  I liked them but because they were so rich, we ended up eating only a couple of bites from the mound served to us.

For dessert, the White Chocoloate Macadamia Bread Pudding with Kaluha anglaise and pineapple ice cream was a great ending.  We love, love, love bread pudding and thought that this white chocolate version was not too sweet and well with the tart ice cream.  I only wish there was more of it.  ;)

Rehab Your Brows with Elke Von Freudenberg

I do not like shaping my eyebrows.  I find the beauty routine extremely intimidating and scary.  Just one overzealous plucking session or miscalculation of the brows’ symmetry and I have to live with the unsightly consequences for months.

Thank goodness I live in the fashion capital of the America where experienced eyebrow specialists are well-priced and available to the masses.  And one favorite new brow specialists right here in NYC is Elke Von Freudenberg.

Elke Von Freudenberg is a makeup veteran of the Los Angeles movie and TV industries and the New York editorial scene and knows how detrimental a botched brow job can be.  Over the 20+ years of experience in the beauty industry, Von Freudenberg has perfected her ability to not only create beautiful brows but also rehab not-to-great ones.

NARS Pure Matte Lipstick Wears All Day

It seems that matte lipsticks have been all the rage for this Fall season.  And while I haven’t tried them all, I’ve tried enough to know that they aren’t my cup of tea when it comes to lip formulas.

But, I have found one this season that I actually don’t mind, thanks to its long-wearing formula that doesn’t completely dry out my lips – NARS Pure Matte Lipstick ($25 US each).
