Holiday Decompression: Lisa Hoffman Madagascar Orchid Candle

This holiday season has been one of the busiest ones I can remember in a long time. During the month of December I was only home for one weekend. The rest of the time I was traveling for work as well as leisure, visiting the Boyfriend in San Francisco.

Now as I mentally prepare to leave on my 3-week trip to Asia, I am sitting quietly in my living room trying to find a moment to myself before I head off to the office. To help me relax, I’m inhaling the soothing scent of Lisa Hoffman’s Madagascar Orchid Candle ($46 US).

Holiday Gift Guide: Coworkers & Colleagues

It’s company holiday party time! One of the traditions that accompany office holiday parties is the Secret Santa gift exchange.

Though I love shopping and giving gifts, there is something terribly frightening about the office Secret Santa gift exchange. The whole thing reminds me of The Office episode where Michael gives Ryan an iPod (spending way over budget) and turns a well-intentioned ritual to a nasty White Elephant exchange instead.

The main reason Secret Santa exchanges scare me is that you don’t get to choose your giftee. The recipient can be someone you know really well, not at all, or (eek!) your boss. Your options are also limited by a pre-determined budget. The gift is supposed to be somewhat special and personal but not too personal that it reveals embarrassing information about the recipient.

This year, it took me a solid week of strategizing and consulting with other coworkers before I decided on my Secret Santa gift. In the holiday spirit of giving, I’ve found six gift ideas to help ease your Secret Santa shopping anguish.

Holiday Gift Guide: The Beauty Maven

The Beauty Maven is the hardest to shop for. She’s in the know, already has the latest and greatest products and is on waiting lists for the newest beauty and makeup collections. I have a handful of friends that fall into this category so I understand what an arduous task it is to get something they’ll like and (even more difficult) that they don’t already own.

After years of being challenged with having to find gifts for my wonderful but difficult-to-buy-for friends, I’ve devised a plan. My strategy is to go to the extremes and either get them something basic, utilitarian with an upgraded twist or go the opposite way and find items that are niche, over-the-top or just plain dreamy (but within my credit card limit).
