Crystal Says: Weekend Beauty Reads

It may seem hard to believe but I actually only started becoming obsessed with nails maybe a year or two ago. Before then I did not keep with nail trends or collections and could fit all the polishes I owned in a small basket.

What a contrast to now! There are some lacquers in the back of my crowded box that I still haven’t had the chance to wear yet making me wish I had more fingers to paint. Like now for instance after purchasing a couple pieces from the China Glaze Metro Collection.

Here are the two I’m most excited about: Skyscraper and CG In the City. Aren’t they a gorgeously glittery duo?

Nail Essentials: CND Stickey and Sally Hansen Mega Shine

A while ago there was this spread in a magazine showing a model’s elegant avant garde hairdo. There was also included a photo of the style from the back but looking at it, the “perfect” hair was supported by huge clips, foam and cardboard pieces!

It’s exactly these backstage moments that surprise and fascinate me. Thanks to things like blogging and twitter, we’re luckier than ever to be able to see what makeup artists or stylists do before the glossy shots are taken.

Like this kind of peek into the behind the scenes setting, I want to show you my preferred base and top coat. They’re featured in almost all of my Nails of the Week stories but aren’t mentioned by name. Now it’s time for them to get the spotlight!

NARS Fall 2011 Collection

The Fall 2011 collection is resolutely avant-garde. Daring shots of color are tempered with softer, subtler tones. Eyes range from bright true blue to silvery taupe, dazzling peach and matte dove gray. Lips run the gamut from statement-making matte red to sophisticated plum and sparkling champagne pink. A stormy gray nail color adds a mysterious finishing touch. The effect is confident, edgy and intense.

I am IN LOVE with the sultry gray polish from NARS this season. Galion Nail Polish ($17 US) is most certainly going to be a permanent part of my lacquer collection, that’s for absolute sure.

Green Beauty: Jason Calming Lavender Pure Natural Hand & Body Lotion

My skin has been a little angry with me lately. I know it’s because I’ve been going swimming more but I can’t help myself! Thankfully my hair hasn’t been ravaged but since I can’t say the same of my skin I am desperate for some help.

My go-to lotion for irritated, sensitive skin is the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Oatmeal. I like the soothing benefit but it feels very heavy. Great for the winter, but not so much in July so I only use when needed.

I wanted a lighter texture with the same skin-calming properties but never really looked for one. It’s lucky the Jason Pure Natural Hand & Body Lotion in Calming Lavender ($8.45 US) was sent my way.
