How Not To Look Old: Switch to Cream Blushes

blush-beauty-image.jpg

Since I started flipping through the pages of Charla Krupp’s guide on How Not to Look Old, I’ve come across a few fun ideas on simple changes I can make to look younger.

Today’s topic – blush!  To look younger and hipper (or Y+H in Krupp’s lingo), switch from a powder to a cream blush.  That way the color blends more easily into your skin offering a radiant glow from within as opposed to the color sitting on top of your skin.

The only downside to cream blushes is that the formula tends to fade faster than powders so touch-ups throughout the day might be a nuisance.

However if you don’t mind reapplication or generally don’t touch up mid-day anyway (like me), here are swatches of three of my favorite non-powder blushes.  From left to right: NARS Orgasm, MAC Just a Pinch, and Lancôme in Model Mocha.

Be a Minimalist with Tarte Re-Create and A Perfect Whirled

tarte-recreate_perfect-whirled-fotd.jpg

There are always going to be days where you just don’t want to wear any makeup.  And for me, today was one of those days.  It’s bleary and raining outside; I’m not going anywhere so why put on a full face, right?

But just because I’m not leaving the house doesn’t mean I still don’t want to look presentable.

For today’s minimalist face of the day, I wore a new foundation from Tarte: ReCreate Natural Anti-Aging Foundation with Wrinkle Rewind Technology SPF 15 ($37 US) in Cool Bisque.

For me, Tarte ReCreate is a slightly lighter formula than the Estee Lauder Nutritious foundation I reviewed a couple of weeks ago, but offered just as much coverage.  The lighter consistency also made it easier to apply evenly, now that I think about it.

Keeping it light on the eyes, I swept a metallic stone-shaded shadow across my lids and then used Tarte A Perfect Whirled Cheek Stain to sustain the rosy in my cheeks.

Tarte A Perfect Whirled Natural Swirl Cheek Stain ($28 US) combines a pearlized baby pink with a deeper candy-colored pink in a fun swirl that results in a frosty, shimmery shade that might work better if your complexion is on the cooler side.

Holiday Look with tarte Purse Your Lips

allure-shimmery-model.jpg

I have to admit, I don’t surf the online beauty websites as often as I’d like to.  But this morning, I was perusing Allure.com and came across this photo to base my holiday look around.

There’s nothing more captivating in the middle of winter than a shimmery ice princess, a look that I think I can pull off just by adding a little bit of sparkle to my eyes and lips.  And I have the perfect lip glosses in mind to finish my look – tarte’s Purse Your Lips Limited Edition Super Fruit Lipgloss Clutch ($39 US).

tarte-purse-your-lips-collection.jpg

This lip collection comes with 9 brand new limited edition shades formulated with tarte’s t5 super fruit complex blend of the five most active superfruits packed with vitamins and antioxidants to benefit your skin including pomegrante, acai, and goji.

All the shades are on the sheer side, but are definitely buildable to obtain a little bit of color if you really want it, especially the darker colors.  The formula is also tacky enough to stay on for a few hours, but not annoying sticky – which makes for a nice lip gloss.

Emmy’s Steal the Look: Teri Hatcher

teri-hatcher_2008-emmys.jpg

I loved Teri Hatcher’s youthful look at the 2008 Emmy Awards this year – so vibrant in her yellow Monique L’huillier gown, bling dripping all over herself, with her usual minimalist makeup and beachy waves she’s known for.

If you’ve got a red carpet event to attend, or maybe it’s just Saturday night with the beau, sass it up in just 15 minutes with a few staple items from your beauty arsenal.

Hair is key to Teri’s signature style – try Redken Contour 08 Body Shaping Lotion ($11.99 US) and work it through towel-dry hair. Blow-dry until mostly dry and then roll up your locks in sections with large hair curlers. Continue blow-drying all over until completely dry and release your new waves from curlers. Gently run your fingers through your hair to break up the curls; set with Redken Workforce 09 Flexible Volumizing Spray ($14.99 US).
