Whenever my friends ask me to do their makeup for special events, it’s the classic, sexy smoky eye that gets the most requests. And while my friends love the look, admiring their dramatically defined eyes in the mirror, they often tell me that they wish they could recreate the look on their own.
As a good friend, I’m not about to tell them that yes, they can master the ultimate smoky eye in a New York minute. It takes time, practice, patience, and most importantly, a bottle of makeup remover. However, I do make a point to let them know that they can reinterpret the smoky eye in a simplified, easier way. It’s a fast look too that’s just perfect for Valentine’s Day.
The key to a smoky eye is thick, sexy definition. Rather then messing with dark eyeshadows that can be tricky to blend, I recommend smudging an intense black eyeliner like Gorgeous Cosmetics iInk Liquid Eye Pencil in Black ($24 US) along the upper lashline and smudging it ever so slightly with a Q-tip or a pencil brush. Not enough to fade the line, just to make it slightly imperfect. I like that this eyeliner is very creamy, but sets relatively quickly.
Since darkness can take away depth and dimension, I like sweeping a neutral nude or soft brown matte eyeshadow in the crease. Adding plenty of mascara to offset the darkness along the lashline is also key. Lately I like using the Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara ($15 US) and Max Factor 2000 Calorie Dramatic Volume Mascara ($9.90 US), which feature simple, basic brushes to really grab onto every lash.
The finishing touches would have to be using a waterproof black eyeliner, like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Covet Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir ($19 US), to line the upper and lower waterline to make lashes look fuller at the base and very lightly smudging it along the lower lashline for extra definition. Highlighting the brow bone with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Matte Highlighter in Camille ($21 US) is a five-second investment in brightening the look and making your eyes look bigger.
How do you simplify the smoky eye? What eye makeup are you contemplating for Valentine’s Day?
